Sage One, Sage Business Cloud or Sage Accounting: Which Do I Have?

Sage One, Sage Business Cloud Accounting and Sage Accounting are three names for one browser-based product. How to tell it from Sage 50 and Sage 50cloud in a minute, and why it decides how you connect Shopify.

Sage One, Sage Business Cloud Accounting and Sage Accounting are the same product. Sage has renamed its browser-based small-business accounting software twice, and all three names are still in use on invoices, in help articles, in app stores and inside the software itself. If your Sage opens in a browser tab and your subscription is called Accounting Start, Standard or Plus, this is what you have. If Sage opens from the Windows Start menu, you have Sage 50, even if it's sold as Sage 50cloud.

The distinction matters for more than tidiness. The browser product has a cloud API, so a Shopify connector for it installs from the Shopify App Store and nothing runs on your computer. Sage 50 keeps its data in a company file on a PC, so its connectors are Windows programs. Pick the wrong one and it simply won't connect.

In this post:

One Product, Three Names

Name When Where you'll still see it
Sage One The launch name, from 2011 in the UK and soon after elsewhere. Old invoices, bookkeepers who set it up years ago, the sageone part of some web addresses.
Sage Business Cloud Accounting From April 2018, when Sage gathered its cloud products under the "Sage Business Cloud" brand. The connection screens of apps that integrate with it, the Shopify App Store listing, Sage's developer documentation, many help articles.
Sage Accounting The current name. Sage dropped "Business Cloud" from the product name a few years after the 2018 rebrand. Sage's website and pricing pages, your subscription, the app's own branding.

Your logins, your data and your business didn't change with the names. Someone who signed up for Sage One in 2015 and never cancelled is a Sage Accounting customer today.

What "Sage Business Cloud" Meant

"Sage Business Cloud" was never one product. In 2018 it became an umbrella brand that Sage put in front of several products, which is why "I use Sage Business Cloud" is an ambiguous answer:

If you were told you have... You actually have...
Sage Business Cloud Accounting Sage Accounting, the browser product this post is about.
Sage 50cloud (Accounting or Accounts) Sage 50, the desktop program, with a cloud add-on for remote data access and Microsoft 365. It's the same Windows software, and connectors treat it as Sage 50.
Sage 200cloud Sage 200, the UK mid-market product. Installed on a server.
Sage Business Cloud X3 Sage X3, the enterprise ERP.
Sage Business Cloud Financials A product built on Salesforce, formerly Sage Live. No longer sold.

Sage has since moved away from the umbrella name, but a lot of the material you'll find online was written while it was in use. When a page says "Sage Business Cloud", look for the second word.

Tell Which Sage You Have in One Minute

  1. How do you open it? If you type an address into a browser, or click a bookmark, and sign in with a Sage account, it's Sage Accounting (or one of Sage's larger browser products, Intacct or Sage 200's web screens, which you'd know about). If you double-click an icon on the desktop, or open it from the Start menu, it's Sage 50. The cloud features of Sage 50cloud don't change that: the program still runs on the PC.
  2. What does the subscription say? Open your Sage account page or your last Sage invoice. Sage Accounting is billed as Accounting Start, Accounting Standard or Accounting Plus (just "Accounting" in some countries). Sage 50 is billed as Sage 50 Pro, Premium or Quantum (US and Canada) or Sage 50 Accounts Standard or Professional (UK and Ireland).
  3. What does the About box say? In Sage 50, Help → About shows the product name and release: "Sage 50 Premium Accounting 2026", "Sage 50 Accounts v31" and so on. The browser product has no About box; its name is in the top-left corner of the page.
  4. Is there a company file? Sage 50 keeps your books in a file (a .SAI file and a folder in the Canadian edition, a company folder in the US edition, an ACCDATA folder in the UK) that you back up yourself. Sage Accounting has no file to back up.

Which Countries Still Have Sage Accounting

Sage Accounting is sold in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and several other countries, with tax built for each: VAT and Making Tax Digital in the UK, VAT in Ireland, GST, HST and PST by province in Canada.

In the United States, Sage retired Sage Business Cloud Accounting on 31 December 2024, with access ending on 31 January 2025. The retirement applied only to the US edition. A US business that was on Sage One or Sage Business Cloud Accounting has since moved, and Sage's remaining US small-business product is Sage 50 US, with Sage Intacct for larger companies. If you're in the US and your Sage runs in a browser today, it's Intacct or a hosted copy of Sage 50, not Sage Accounting.

Start, Standard or Plus

Within Sage Accounting, the edition decides what an online store can do with it:

Edition What it adds For a Shopify store
Accounting Start Invoicing, bank feeds, VAT or sales tax. No product catalog, no stock. Orders post as invoices with every line to one sales account. Enough for sales and tax in the books.
Accounting Standard Products and services, quotes, purchase invoices, full reporting, MTD VAT returns in the UK. Each invoice line posts to its own Sage item and sales account. The usual minimum.
Accounting Plus Stock items with quantities and costs, multi-currency. Sold in the UK, Ireland and Canada. Stock kept in line with Shopify.

Our post on whether Sage Accounting suits a small Shopify store goes through the editions in more detail.

Why It Decides How Shopify Connects

The two products connect to Shopify in opposite ways, and a connector for one cannot talk to the other.

  • Sage Accounting has a cloud API. A connector can run entirely inside Shopify: you install it from the Shopify App Store, sign in to Sage once, and orders post from Shopify's servers whether or not your computer is on. Sagify for Sage Accounting works this way: orders become Sage invoices, refunds become credit notes, payouts reconcile, stock matches, with a free plan to start. Note that the Shopify App Store listing from Sage itself is called "Sage Business Cloud Accounting": that's this product, under its 2018 name.
  • Sage 50 has no cloud API. Its connectors are Windows programs installed next to Sage 50 that write into the company file through Sage's own interface, so the computer has to be on while orders post. Sagify for Sage 50 is one, for the US and Canadian editions. The reasons are in Does Sage 50 integrate with Shopify?.

So before you install anything: browser or Start menu? That one question tells you which connector to look for, and which App Store listings to ignore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sage One still available?

Not under that name. Sage One became Sage Business Cloud Accounting in 2018 and is now sold as Sage Accounting. Existing Sage One subscriptions carried over; nobody had to migrate.

Is Sage 50cloud the same as Sage Accounting?

No. Sage 50cloud is Sage 50, the desktop program, with cloud extras such as remote data access and Microsoft 365 integration. It runs on a Windows PC and keeps a company file. Sage Accounting runs in the browser. Despite the shared word "cloud", they are different programs with different connectors.

Is Sage Accounting the same as Sage Intacct?

No. Sage Intacct is Sage's cloud financial system for mid-sized and larger organisations, with multi-entity consolidation and its own API. Sage Accounting is for small businesses. Both run in a browser; a Shopify connector for one doesn't work with the other.

Which Sage do I have if I'm in the United States and it runs in a browser?

Probably Sage Intacct, or Sage 50 US hosted by a provider and reached through a remote desktop. Sage retired the US edition of Sage Business Cloud Accounting at the end of 2024, so a US business can't be on Sage Accounting today.

Does the "Sage Business Cloud Accounting" app on the Shopify App Store work with Sage 50?

No. That listing connects to Sage Accounting only. Sage 50 US and Canada need a Windows connector such as Sagify; Sage 50 Accounts in the UK needs a connector built for that edition. See Shopify to Sage 50 in the UK.

Can I move from Sage 50 to Sage Accounting?

Yes, in the countries where Sage Accounting is sold, and Sage and many accountants offer a migration. Whether you should depends on inventory: Sage Accounting's stock is simpler than Sage 50's, so a store with assemblies or serial numbers usually stays on Sage 50.
